What Counts as a Big Taxi in Dubai?
Dubai has two metered or app-dispatched options that qualify as a big taxi, and both are booked through the same app. Hala Max is the larger RTA metered taxi inside the Careem app: an SUV or van-class vehicle carrying up to six passengers on the standard taxi meter, aimed at families, airport groups and anyone with real luggage. Careem Max is the equivalent on Careem's own ride fleet, also up to six passengers, priced dynamically rather than on the meter.
That "up to six" figure is the number that decides everything else on this page. It comes from Careem's own published UAE listings, which we break down tier by tier in our Careem car types comparison. There is no metered 7-seater or 8-seater taxi category in Dubai - a bigger group needs a different tool, covered below.
How to Book a Big Taxi in Dubai
- Careem app, taxi section: select Hala Max instead of the standard Hala Taxi. You get a larger RTA vehicle on the official meter, plus the app booking fee. This is the standard route and the one that works most reliably.
- Careem app, ride section: select Max for Careem's own larger vehicle. Dynamic pricing - check the quote at busy times before confirming.
- At DXB Airport: larger vehicles operate at the arrivals taxi ranks. Tell the marshal your passenger and luggage count and you will be directed to one if available - availability is not guaranteed at peak arrival waves.
- Street hail: possible if a van-class taxi happens to pass, but treating that as a plan for six people with suitcases is optimism, not logistics.
Availability is the recurring weakness. The big-taxi fleet is a small slice of the total, so at school-run hours, weekend evenings and big event nights, the app can show no Max cars nearby while standard sedans are plentiful. If the trip has a hard deadline - a flight, a cruise boarding, a reservation - a pre-booked vehicle removes that dice roll.
The Six-Seat Ceiling: Why 7-8 People Do Not Fit
The published capacity of six is a people number, not a people-plus-luggage number. In a van-class taxi with all six seats occupied, the third row sits where the boot used to be, and six airport suitcases have nowhere to go. Real-world capacity for an airport run is closer to four or five passengers with bags. A family of six arriving with holiday luggage regularly discovers this at the kerb.
At seven or more passengers the maths stops being about comfort and becomes two vehicles: two fares, two dispatches, two arrival times, and at busy times surge applied to both. That is the point where the per-person cost of one larger pre-booked vehicle undercuts the two-taxi total, and it is why the rest of this page splits into on-demand options for up to six and pre-booked options for seven and above. How to Book a Big Taxi in Sharjah
Sharjah runs its own answer, and it goes one seat further than Dubai. The SRTA operates family taxis - 7-seat Toyota Innova-class vehicles aimed at larger households - alongside the standard fleet. Book one by calling the SRTA taxi hotline on 600 525252 or through the official SRTA app; a phone booking carries the AED 5 surcharge that applies to all Sharjah taxi bookings. The usual cross-emirate restriction applies: a Sharjah taxi can drop your group in Dubai but cannot pick anyone up there for the return. Fares follow the SRTA tariff, which we cover in the Sharjah taxi fare guide.
Above Six Passengers: The Pre-Booked Options
Once your group is seven or more, or six with a genuine luggage load, the working options are pre-booked vehicles with a driver and a fixed price confirmed before pickup. These are not metered taxis - they are the category the taxi fleet does not reach.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Luggage | How to Book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hala Max (RTA meter) | Up to 6 | Limited with all seats in use | Careem app, taxi section |
| Careem Max (own fleet) | Up to 6 | Limited with all seats in use | Careem app, ride section |
| SRTA family taxi (Sharjah) | 7 | Limited | SRTA hotline 600 525252 or app |
| GMC Yukon (pre-booked) | 7-8 | 5 large cases with row 3 folded; carry-on at full seats | WhatsApp, fixed price |
| Mercedes Vito (pre-booked) | 8 | 2-3 pieces in rear storage; confirm larger loads | WhatsApp, fixed price |
| Sprinter class (pre-booked) | 10-14 | Dedicated luggage bay, 10+ checked bags | WhatsApp, fixed price |
The GMC Yukon is the premium SUV route: 7-8 passengers across three rows, and with the third row folded it swallows five large suitcases - the family-of-five airport configuration. The Mercedes Vito carries a full 8 passengers in chauffeur configuration, with DXB Airport to Downtown running AED 280-350 fixed - AED 35-44 per person at full load. For 9 to 14 people, a van with driver in Sprinter class covers airport groups at AED 350-450 and full days from AED 1,500, with a proper luggage bay behind the seats.
Booking works the way the rest of this site does: WhatsApp your passenger count, luggage count, route and time, and you get a fixed price back before anything is confirmed. No meter, no surge, no splitting the group across two cars at the kerb.
