Which Taxi Is Cheapest in Dubai?
For a single trip, the cheapest taxi in Dubai is the standard cream RTA taxi hailed from the street. The reason is structural, not promotional. The street minimum fare is AED 12 against AED 13 for an app booking, a street hail carries no booking fee, and the meter rate is fixed by RTA tariff: AED 5.00 flag fall by day (AED 5.50 at night, 10pm to 6am) plus roughly AED 2.19 per km. That tariff does not surge. Ever.
App-based cars - Careem's own fleet and Uber - price dynamically. Off-peak they can match the meter, and a promo code can tip them below it. At 8am, 6pm, on weekend evenings, in rain, and around big events, dynamic pricing rises while the RTA meter stays exactly where it was. If you only remember one rule: when the city is busy, the metered taxi is the cheap car.
We keep the full tariff table and per-emirate rates in the UAE taxi fare guide, and you can price a specific trip with the taxi fare calculator. German speakers can read the Dubai tariff in German on our Taxi Kosten Dubai page. This page is about strategy: which option to pick, and when.
Street Taxi vs App Booking: Where the Dirhams Go
Hala, the taxi option inside the Careem app, sends you the same RTA metered taxi you would hail from the street. The meter is identical. What changes is the wrapper: a booking fee is added, and the minimum fare rises from AED 12 to AED 13. You are paying a few dirhams for the convenience of a car coming to a pin instead of you standing on a road. That is often worth it - just know it is never the cheaper of the two.
- Street hail: AED 12 minimum, no booking fee, no surge. Cheapest per-trip taxi in the city.
- Hala via Careem app: same meter, AED 13 minimum plus a booking fee. Pays for itself when taxis are scarce where you stand.
- Careem / Uber own fleet: dynamic pricing. Fine off-peak, expensive at peak. Check the quoted price against a rough meter estimate before confirming.
One more line on discounts, because "taxi offers" is a real search and the honest answer is short: the RTA meter never discounts, and every offer that exists lives on the app side as a promo code or ride credit. Current codes and how to apply them are covered in our Hala taxi promo code guide.
The Airport Trap
The single biggest overpayment tourists make on Dubai taxis happens in the first ten minutes of their trip. Taxis picking up at Dubai International Airport (DXB) start the meter at AED 20 (AED 25 in a van) instead of the normal AED 5.00 flag fall. That is AED 15 of airport premium before the wheels turn, and Dubai Taxi lists a higher per-km rate for airport pickups too: AED 2.62, against the roughly AED 2.19 used on this page.
Worked example, 15 km from the airport to Downtown: airport pickup runs AED 20 + (15 x AED 2.19) = about AED 53, or about AED 59 at the AED 2.62 airport rate. The identical 15 km started from a street outside the airport zone would be about AED 38. App-booked cars from DXB carry their own pickup charges, so switching to an app does not remove the premium. If arrival cost matters more than convenience, the Metro section below is the real answer; if you want a car regardless, at least know the AED 20 start is normal and not a scam. More on arrival options in our Dubai Airport transfer guide.
What a Cheap Taxi Actually Costs: Worked Examples
All figures use the 2026 RTA day tariff: AED 5.00 flag fall, ~AED 2.19 per km, AED 12 street minimum. Salik toll gates add AED 4 to 6 per crossing when your route passes one.
| Trip | Meter Arithmetic | You Pay (approx) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 km short hop | AED 5.00 + 3 x 2.19 = AED 11.57 | AED 12 (street minimum applies) |
| 10 km cross-town | AED 5.00 + 10 x 2.19 = AED 26.90 | AED 27, plus AED 4-6 per Salik gate |
| 20 km, e.g. Deira to Marina | AED 5.00 + 20 x 2.19 = AED 48.80 | AED 49-59 with 1-2 Salik gates |
| 15 km from DXB Airport | AED 20 start + 15 x 2.19 to 2.62 = AED 52.85 to 59.30 | AED 53-59, airport start replaces flag fall |
| Same 15 km from the street | AED 5.00 + 15 x 2.19 = AED 37.85 | AED 38 - the airport premium is about AED 15-21 |
The Genuinely Cheapest Option: Metro and Bus
Honesty first: for many trips the cheapest ride in Dubai is not a taxi at all, and we do not sell Metro tickets, so take this as a straight recommendation. A Dubai Metro trip on a Silver Nol card costs AED 3 for one zone, AED 5 for two, and AED 7.50 at most across the whole network, with a daily cap of AED 14 after which the rest of the day rides free. The Red Line serves DXB Terminals 1 and 3 directly, so an arriving traveller with light luggage can reach Downtown or the Marina for less than a tenth of a taxi fare.
Buses cover the gaps between Metro stations on the same Nol card. The trade-off is the last kilometre: Dubai is spread out and hot for much of the year, and a station 800 metres from your hotel in August is further than it sounds. The practical pattern many residents use is Metro for the long leg, then a short AED 12 street taxi from the station to the door. That combination routinely beats a single long taxi ride by half or more.
Five Ways to Pay Less for the Same Ride
- Hail from the street when taxis are visibly passing - you save the booking fee and one dirham of minimum fare every single time.
- Compare the app quote to the meter before confirming. If the dynamic price is above your rough meter estimate, take the taxi.
- Travel off-peak where you can. Meter waiting charges in jams and app surge both punish 8am and 6pm.
- Split the car. Four people in one taxi pay a quarter each of one fare. Two taxis for the same group pay two flag falls, two minimums and two sets of Salik.
- Mix modes. Metro for distance, short taxi for the last leg, as above.
When a Fixed-Price Pre-Booked Car Is the Cheap Option
It sounds backwards from a chauffeur company, but a pre-booked car is not the cheap choice for one person making one short trip - a street taxi wins that case every time. It becomes the cheap choice in two specific situations, both of which come down to arithmetic rather than comfort.
Groups splitting one vehicle. Five to seven people do not fit in one taxi, so a group pays for two cars: two flag falls or two airport starts, two minimums, double Salik, and at peak times double surge if they went the app route. One larger vehicle at a fixed price, divided by six or seven passengers, frequently comes out below the two-car total - and everyone travels together.
Multi-stop days. A day of four or more separate taxi legs - hotel, mall, lunch, attraction, dinner - stacks up minimums, booking fees and peak pricing, plus the queue in the heat at each stop. A car with driver in Dubai runs from roughly AED 200 to 250 per hour with a 3-hour minimum, or AED 1,200 to 1,600 for a full 8-hour day with around 100 km included, with fuel, insurance and the driver's waiting time all inside the rate and Salik passed through at cost. Past roughly four taxi trips plus waiting, the fixed day rate stops being the expensive option.
If your plan looks like either case, WhatsApp us the route and passenger count and we reply with a fixed price - compare it against your own two-taxi or four-trip estimate and take whichever is lower. For a rundown of the taxi fleet itself, see Dubai taxi types.
