The Apps That Work in Dubai, Side by Side
The single most useful thing to understand about a Dubai taxi app is not its interface but what it puts you in. Some apps dispatch official metered taxis, where the fare is set by the RTA meter. Others dispatch private-hire cars, where the app quotes a price that moves with demand. That split explains almost every price difference people argue about.
| App | What it books | Pricing model | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Careem (Hala Taxi) | RTA metered taxi | Meter fare, no surge on Hala | Dubai-wide; the default for most residents |
| Careem (private cars) | Private-hire car | Quoted in app, rises at busy times | Dubai-wide, plus other emirates |
| Uber | Private-hire car | Upfront quote, dynamic pricing | Dubai-wide; familiar for visitors |
| Bolt | Dubai Taxi Company fleet | Quoted in app | Dubai; newer entrant via DTC partnership |
| Yango | Private-hire car, plus RTA taxis | Quoted in app; taxis at regulated fares | Dubai; named by the RTA for taxi booking in 2026 |
| S'hail (RTA) | RTA taxi + public transport | Meter fare | Dubai; official RTA journey app |
| RTA Sharjah app | SRTA metered taxi | Meter fare | Sharjah only |
Careem and Hala: The Default Choice
Careem is the app most Dubai residents reach for first, and the reason is the Hala option inside it. Hala is a joint venture between Careem and the RTA: choose Hala Taxi and the car that arrives is an official cream-coloured RTA taxi running the standard meter. You get app convenience - live tracking, card payment, a recorded trip - at metered taxi rates, without surge multiplication when demand spikes. The trade-off is availability: at peak moments the meter price holds but the wait grows.
The same app also books Careem's own private-hire car types, which quote a fare upfront that rises at busy times. If you are new to Hala, our Hala taxi guide covers how bookings work alongside the RTA fleet. What the metered fare itself costs is covered in our UAE taxi fare guide.
Uber: Familiar, Private-Hire, Priced by Demand
Uber operates fully in Dubai and is the path of least resistance for visitors who already have an account, a saved card, and the app installed. What you book is a private-hire vehicle rather than a metered taxi, with an upfront quote that uses dynamic pricing - fine on a quiet Tuesday, noticeably higher late on a weekend night or when it rains. Vehicles are typically newer private cars, and the experience is consistent with Uber anywhere else.
Bolt: The Newer Entrant with the DTC Fleet
Bolt arrived in Dubai through a partnership with the Dubai Taxi Company, which means a Bolt booking draws on DTC's taxi fleet rather than a pool of private cars. Its arrival added genuine price competition to the market, and it is worth having installed as a second option even if Careem stays your default - when one network is stretched, the other often is not.
Yango and S'hail: The Rest of the Field
Yango launched in Dubai in 2022 as a private-hire app, positioned squarely on price, and has picked up real traction as the budget alternative to Careem and Uber. It now books official Dubai taxis too: in 2026 the RTA named Yango alongside Hala, Bolt and Zed as apps for booking Dubai taxis at the same regulated fares. S'hail is different in kind: it is RTA's own journey app, built to plan trips across metro, bus and taxi in one place, and it includes taxi booking. Few tourists install S'hail just to book a cab, but if you are using Dubai public transport anyway it earns its place, and it is also the app route for reporting items left in a taxi.
The Sharjah Taxi App
Sharjah runs its own regulated fleet under the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, and it has its own official app: RTA Sharjah, available for iOS and Android, with taxi booking among its services. SRTA also takes phone bookings on 600 52 52 52, and Careem and Uber both operate in Sharjah too. The catch that matters for anyone commuting across the border: the fleets do not cross over, so a Sharjah taxi cannot pick you up inside Dubai and a Dubai taxi cannot pick up in Sharjah. Contacts and operator details are in our Sharjah taxi number guide.
When an App Beats a Pre-Booked Driver, and When It Does Not
An honest scorecard, since we sell the alternative. For a spontaneous short hop across town, a taxi app wins: it is cheaper, the supply is deep, and a car is usually minutes away. Nobody needs a chauffeur to go two kilometres to dinner.
The app model gets weaker exactly where its structure shows. Every app dispatches the nearest available car when you ask; none of them commits a specific vehicle to you in advance. For a 4am airport run, a wedding, or a client pickup, "usually minutes away" is not the same as "guaranteed". Dynamic pricing also means the private-hire apps are at their most expensive at the moments you most need them. A pre-booked chauffeur inverts both weaknesses: the price is fixed before you travel and the vehicle is committed to your time slot. For intercity trips and group travel in a single large vehicle, the fixed price frequently undercuts a surged app quote as well. The full breakdown sits in our private driver versus taxi comparison, and if you want the whole menu of booking routes beyond apps - street hailing, hotel desks, airport ranks - see our guide on how to book a taxi in Dubai.
