The Five Ways to Get a Taxi in Dubai
Dubai taxi booking is simpler than most first-time visitors expect, but the honest picture in 2026 has one surprise in it: the phone line most guides still mention no longer dispatches taxis. Here is every route that actually works, ranked by how you will most likely use them.
| Method | Best for | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| Street hail | Fast in central areas at normal hours | Unreliable in suburbs, in rain, and at peak times |
| App booking (Careem/Hala, Bolt, Uber, others) | Trip is recorded, driver comes to you | Wait times stretch when demand spikes |
| Hotel doorman or concierge | Zero effort, works at any hotel | Only useful when you are actually at a hotel |
| Airport and mall taxi ranks | Constant supply, marshalled queues | Queues can be long at peak arrival times |
| Pre-booked private driver | Guaranteed vehicle at a fixed time and price | Costs more than a metered taxi |
Hailing a Taxi on the Street
Dubai is a street-hail city in its central districts. Licensed taxis are cream-coloured with a coloured roof panel, and the roof sign is your signal: lit means the taxi is available, dark or showing occupied means it is not. Stand where a car can pull over legally, raise your arm, and make eye contact with the driver. On Sheikh Zayed Road itself taxis cannot stop for you - walk to a side road, a hotel entrance or a mall drop-off point instead.
Street hailing works well in Deira, Bur Dubai, Downtown, DIFC and along the Marina at normal hours. It works badly in residential suburbs like the Springs or Jumeirah Village, in industrial areas, during rain, and around the late-afternoon driver shift change, when available cars thin out everywhere at once. The roof colours themselves tell you which operator runs the car, and our guide to Dubai taxi types explains the differences, including the pink-roof family taxis and airport vehicles.
Calling a Taxi: What the Phone Number Actually Does Now
This is where most older advice is wrong. For years you could ring the RTA call centre and have a taxi dispatched to your address. RTA has since migrated taxi booking to the Hala e-hailing platform, which means the call centre no longer sends cabs - booking now happens through the apps, or on the street, or at a rank.
The number itself, 800 90 90, is still very much alive and still worth saving. It is RTA's customer service line, used for complaints, fare disputes and lost property, and it remains the right number if you leave something on a back seat. The full list of official contacts is in our Dubai taxi number guide. Just do not expect it to take a booking.
If what you actually want is to arrange a car by message rather than through an app, that service exists - it is just not a metered taxi. A WhatsApp message to a chauffeur service gets you a confirmed vehicle, a named driver and a fixed price, which is the part the old phone line never offered anyway.
Booking Through an App
App booking is the official replacement for phone dispatch and the default for most residents. The short version: the Hala option inside the Careem app books an RTA metered taxi, Bolt dispatches Dubai Taxi Company vehicles, RTA's own S'hail app includes taxi booking, and in 2026 the RTA also named Zed and Yango as apps for booking Dubai taxis at the same regulated fares. Uber runs private-hire cars alongside, and so does Yango on its other ride types. Each app differs in what it books, how it prices, and where it is strongest, and choosing between them is a decision of its own. We compare all of them honestly in our guide to Dubai taxi apps.
Hotel Doormen and Concierge Desks
The most underrated method in the city. Every hotel in Dubai, from a Deira three-star to a Palm resort, will flag or phone a taxi for a guest, and the doorman does it dozens of times a day. You do not need to be staying there - walking into a hotel lobby and asking is normal practice, and it is the standard fallback when a street hail is not happening. Tipping the doorman a few dirhams is appreciated but not required. If you want a car arranged ahead rather than whichever taxi turns up, a private driver booked direct for your hotel stay usually costs less than the same car ordered through the concierge.
Airport and Mall Taxi Ranks
At Dubai International, follow the taxi signs from any arrivals hall to the marshalled rank, where taxis queue around the clock. No booking is needed, though airport pickups carry a higher starting fare than street pickups. The system at each terminal, along with the pre-booked alternative, is covered in our Dubai Airport transfer guide.
Every major mall runs the same system on a smaller scale: Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates and the rest have signed taxi pickup points with marshalled queues at busy times. Late on weekend evenings the queue at Dubai Mall can be genuinely long - this is the one place where opening an app while you queue is a sensible hedge.
Can You Pre-Book a Dubai Taxi? The Honest Answer
Not in the way most people mean. RTA metered taxis are an on-demand fleet: the apps match you with the nearest available car when you ask, and even where an app lets you schedule a request in advance, that is a dispatch instruction for the system to act on at the chosen time, not a reserved vehicle with a named driver committed to you. Nobody in that chain is contractually holding a car for your 5am flight.
Most of the time this does not matter. Taxi supply in Dubai is deep, and a car usually turns up within minutes. It matters exactly when the cost of failure is high: an early flight, a wedding, a business meeting, a cruise departure. For those trips, the real version of pre-booking is a private chauffeur - a specific vehicle and driver confirmed in advance, at a fixed price agreed before you travel, with the driver tracking your flight if it is an airport run. That is the service we provide, and a WhatsApp message with your date, time and route gets you a quote.
Accessible Taxis and Travelling with Children
Two situations need more than a street hail. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles exist in the Dubai fleet but must be arranged rather than hailed - our accessible transport guide covers the options and how to arrange them. And standard taxis do not carry child seats by default, which surprises many arriving families; the rules and workarounds are in our child car seat guide. In both cases a pre-booked vehicle specified in advance is the dependable route.
